UNDERGROUND RAILROAD HAUNTING
Miss Brenda, la Porte, Indiana
This story comes from a small town in southern Indiana named Attica.
About 10 years ago I was invited to view a very interesting piece of history that was for sale for 10,000 dollars. The item was two houses, a church, a cemetery and a story. Back in the days of the underground railroad there were many tunnels built underground. Most of these tunnels went from one house to another. Often there was a church's cemetery along the route. One of the tomb stones in the cemetery was shaped as a very small coffin. This was the way to get into the tunnel from the outside, or to get out if there was trouble. This is where the African-American slander "spooks " came from.
During one of the runs, the tunnel connecting the two houses and the church collapsed. The trapped slaves had nowhere to go. Panicked and scared, they all died in the tunnel. No one took there bodies out of the tunnel. If you go into one of the homes, you can hear the ghosts of the slaves trying to get to the other house. At times you can see their images in the halls trying to get help, trying to find someone to unbury them.
When I was down there, my friend and I wanted to see the inside of the houses. Due to not being upkept at all, the homes were too dangerous to enter, let alone walk in!
